Nutrition for kids
Healthy eating can be easy with kids if you keep a few things in mind:
1. Keep junk food out of the house to avoid temptation.
2. Mix up the healthy stuff with the kid friendly food such as apples with peanut butter, graham cracker sticks and fat free yogurt.
3. Replace white bread with whole grain bread.
4. Avoid the empty calories and extra sugar in fruit juices.
5. Meals and snacks should only be eaten in the kitchen/dining room and never in front of the television or computer.
6. Involve kids in the purchase and preparation of meals. If they feel they had a stake in the family meal they may be more inclined to try it.
7. Make it fun. Make whole wheat pancakes in different shapes. Mickey Mouse is fun and easy to make with pancake batter.
8. Get kids a fun cup or fancy straws to drink their water from.
9. Don't force kids to "clean their plate" as we were taught. This encourages kids to overeat before they realize they are full.
10. The most important tip is to be the example your kids deserve. Eat healthy and exercise and your kids will follow suit.
